Position Summary
The MHP Field Inspector plays a vital role in assessing and documenting the conditions of manufactured home parks (MHPs) in Danville, VA. This position involves conducting detailed on-site inspections to evaluate housing quality, infrastructure, and compliance with local regulations. By collecting accurate data and identifying areas for improvement, the inspector contributes directly to initiatives aimed at enhancing living conditions for residents. The role requires a combination of technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate findings effectively to diverse stakeholders.
Roles and Responsibilities
Field Inspections & Data Collection
- Conduct thorough visual inspections of housing units, common areas, and infrastructure within assigned MHPs.
- Assess the condition of roofs, walls, foundations, and utility systems, noting any visible hazards or deficiencies.
- Use standardized checklists and digital tools to document findings, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Capture photographic evidence to support observations and maintain a comprehensive record of conditions.
Compliance & Safety Monitoring
- Verify compliance with local housing codes, safety regulations, and accessibility standards.
- Identify and report violations, such as unpermitted modifications or lapsed permits.
- Highlight urgent safety concerns, including fire hazards, electrical issues, or structural risks, for immediate action.
- Review park documentation, including maintenance records and resident complaints, to assess overall compliance.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Coordinate with park owners, managers, and residents to facilitate inspections and gather additional insights.
- Conduct interviews with residents, where appropriate, to understand their experiences and concerns.
- Communicate inspection results clearly and professionally to project teams, local officials, and community representatives.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare detailed reports summarizing inspection findings, including identified risks and recommended actions.
- Organize and present data in accessible formats, such as maps, charts, and annotated photos.
- Contribute to regular progress updates and final deliverables for city stakeholders and funding agencies.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Participate in team meetings to share field observations and inform project adjustments.
- Provide feedback to improve inspection protocols and data collection methods.
- Assist in training new team members or volunteers as needed.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, environmental health, or a related field is preferred, though equivalent practical experience will be considered.
- At least Three years of experience in property inspections, housing assessments, or similar fieldwork.
- Familiarity with manufactured housing construction, maintenance, or regulatory standards is a plus.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with digital data collection tools, such as survey apps or GIS mapping software.
- Basic knowledge of building systems, including electrical, plumbing, and structural components.
- Ability to interpret and apply housing codes, safety regulations, and accessibility guidelines.
Interpersonal Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for preparing reports and engaging with stakeholders.
- Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work respectfully with diverse populations, including non-English speakers.
- Problem-solving skills to address challenges encountered during inspections independently.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Physical stamina to walk extensively, bend, kneel, or use ladders during inspections.
- Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when inspecting high-risk areas.
